US
When thinking of horror it's automatic to believe it's going to be some devilish, hardcore, and repulsing movie/show but the truth is there are many different forms. Horror can be in the form of a comedy, a mystery, or even a cartoon meant for children. It's apparent that the origin of something being a horror film is usually going to involve scary creatures but there are some films that are classified to be horror and when you watch it nothing about it may look scary and yet it still incites fear.
The movie "US" is a great representation of that. In the movie you see the villains are actually yourself and instead of the director making the villains aka "the tethered" look creepy he makes them look identical to the ones above (the ones above being the original versions of "human").
So I guess the question is, what qualifications must a film have to be considered "scary"? What makes a horror movie a horror movie?
Well in my opinion I would say in order for something to be considered a horror film it would have to deal with some kind of death, scary creature, or object/problem that one would naturally relate to fear or discomfort within the mind. Looking at movies that deal with psychological trauma or mental illness those are usually classified as horror the same way a movie about the devil and cults would be. Were taught that a person with psychological damage is usually crazy and or dangerous, which is the same thing as we're told for devilish like creatures.
The reason the movie "US" is considered to be a psychological movie is because looking at what would put a movie in the spot of being a psychological in the case horror, the film would have to be focused on the mental and EMOTIANAL aspects of the mind that would frighten and disturb the viewers. With that, when watching this film you could clearly see the EMOTIANAL aspects shown through the main character and how a time in her child hood is somewhat haunting her and causing her to be afraid. Eventually within the movie you see why it was haunting her and that "thing" which was affecting her mind soon showed up and this is where now we focus on the horror side of the movie until we get back into the psychological aspect of it again during the end.
Now, this movie once again didn't have any scary creatures in it, but it was still classified a horror. And this is what I want part of my 2 minute film to showcase. I like the fact that Mr. Peele (DIRECTOR) didn't make your typical horror film he instead used social class in this case who could be at the top and who had to live at the bottom, who got to get an education and guidance over who wasn't given that, who was allowed the choice on who to love and who was forced or in this movie as it states "Tethered" to the other giving no choice but to be together. You switch like Adalaide did when she was a kid with her tethered, you take on the other's life in place of your's because they have more and you have nothing. You come up with a solution to YOUR problem while the other who was once fortunate is now the unfortunate. You have the life you want because you stole it.....but where does it end?
The original Addy or Adalaide was happy and care free but the tethered version of Addy was sad and angry. Tethered Addy swapped with her original and now roles are reversed. The original is now the sad and angry one while the tethered is happy and living in place of the regular Adalaide. You once had it all but now there is nothing so you wait it out and try to get revenge years later and you fail.
In my 2 minute film I will show a slight glimps of the story if it had not been reversed.
